Is the FOSS world in danger of a corporate takeover, thanks to pushover licenses?

by
ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world

I ask this because I think of the recent switch of Ubuntu to the Rust recode of the GNU core utils, which use an MIT license. There are many Rust recodes of GPL software that re-license it as a pushover MIT or Apache licenses. I worry these relicensing efforts this will significantly harm the FOSS ecosystem. Is this reason to start worrying or is it not that bad?

Has bad branding ever turned you off from software, FOSS or not?

by
TheTwelveYearOld@lemmy.world

I’ll start: while looking at app theming I came across WallRizz, renamed from WallWiz. I haven’t tried it, and looking at it documentation it seems well made, but I cringe at the name and the AI-generated penguin logo. It shares the art style of all the other AI slop, its basically italian brainrot but 2D. WallWiz sounds way better, rizz sounds like it was specially designed for gen alpha (little kids). If there are apps of even similar quality, why would I use this one?

My parents have this old 2015 MacBook Air that they wanted to use but couldn’t due to no security updates and slow running. I convinced them to let me load up fedora on it instead of junking it. Simple Real-Time TTS on Manjaro Linux?

I’m looking for a straightforward way to get real-time text-to-speech (TTS) on Manjaro Linux. I’d like to be able to copy/paste a block of text and start listening to it right away. I’ve seen scripts that split text into sentences and feed them to models like the smallest Kokoro TTS. Does anyone have a simple-to-install solution or script for this on Manjaro?

Short summary of my experience with NixOS: pain, admirations, concerns (haykh.github.io)

by
hayk@lemmy.ml

It was a rainy weekend, and after brewing a mugfull of coffee I sat comfortably and opened my laptop that I powered off yesterday after running an sudo pacman -Syuu yesterday to keep my Arch up to date. I like keeping things nice and up-to-date you know. The first red flags came when my fingerprint recognition wasn’t working when I tried to log in – but that’s fine, I can fix that later, not a biggie. Then the bluetooth was not seeing any devices; after 20 minutes of twiggling, reinstalling, restarting services, it did ultimately find, but didn’t cast audio through that. That’s ok, we’ve been there before, right? Wait why does my dGPU not turn on? Ok, let’s try reinstalling the drivers and cleaning some of processes, restarting. Ok now my bluetooth doesn’t work again – odd. Wait dGPU also still doesn’t work, let me remove the drivers completely… oh wait you also want to remove HIP SDK? But I need that for work… I mean, sure, ok I’ll install it again.

[Help] display managers with transparent backgrounds, showing the desktop itself?

by
TheTwelveYearOld@lemmy.world

I want a display manager that shows the desktop as the background, instead of a background image or video. I’m thinking of auto-logging in on boot, and adding another startup command to Hyprland to lock the desktop and show the display manger. My searches didn’t yield anything. The closest I could find is hyprlock which blurs the desktop, but that’s just a lock screen & not a proper display manager.

Why go through the trouble to use Arch?

by
Horsey@lemmy.world

May be a mean sounding question, but I’m genuinely wondering why people would choose Arch/Endevour/whatever (NOT on steam hardware) over another all-in-one distro related to Fedora or Ubuntu. Is it shown that there are significant performance benefits to installing daemons and utilities à la carte? Is there something else I’m missing? Is it because arch users are enthusiasts that enjoy trying to optimize their system?

x86/32bit to try on an old Acer one nettop intel atom CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz 2GB ram

I was just given an old nettop from I think around 2010 - An old Acer one nettop intel atom CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz 2GB ram, it has Windows XP on it and it seems fairly smooth/quick, but I haven’t done anything other than boot it up and check the spec. I was wondering what would be best to install on it and found that choices are very limited. Linux Lite nor Lubuntu seem to be an option anymore, and almost all of the options I tried under x86_x64 on Distrowatch no longer provide an x86 or 32 bit version. These are the main ones I have seen:

Could somebody help me change where Steam installs Proton/compatibility stuff to?

by
ssillyssadass@lemmy.world

I’m on Mint. I have two partitions, one at 100GB I set up for the main OS installation, and another 1.9TB installation I use for storage. But the first partition is getting some storage issues, which comes partly from Timeshift (which I already redirected) and partially from Steam, specifically Proton. I want to redirect Steam onto the larger partition, but the space Steam takes up in this way is taken up by several smaller files and folders that add up to a lot, so I feel unsure about how to change things properly.

by

I recently set up Bazzite on my friend’s system after switching from Linux Mint due to some Nvidia driver issues. Although the hardware problems are not there anymore, the distro is now facing problems installing certain programs for software development that they had no problem installing in the previous distro. I think there are issues related to the immutability of the distro, though I am not sure since I am new to Linux too. Additionally, my friend is worried about higher storage consumption and slower performance in certain applications.

Moving to linux at home has me using the command line more.

by

So just to be clear I went with a very lazy move to linux from windows. I was not looking to use my day to day in a unixy type way and wanted something that I can install and go without much muss or fuss. So I went with zorin and yeah I have dropped to the command line for some apt installs or such but bascially it was only as needed. Very minimal. Anyway today Im messing with folders and files and suddenly it hit me. Im on linux I can do a lot of this easier with the command line. I know its stupid but my day to day sorta has a mouse brain guie mode and I sorta forget how much easier it is to do some stuff using syntax. So going forward im going to be bringing up the command line to do the things that are quicker.

I’ve been meaning to make the leap for some time, but I had a hiccup with Mint a little while ago, and my key reason for choosing Mint above all others has disappeared. My Windows machine is doing the usual “you’ve had this installed for a while so it’s just going to keep getting slower unless you do a fresh re-install” thing that Windows seems to do, and I’ve got more time on my hands than last time I tried, so I figure why not put that time to use.

What could be the best way to introduce the world of computers to a kid, let’s say of 6 years old, so that he learns to handle it like a toy and stops dreading it like some esoteric, arcane and recondite machine from some eldritch, enigmatic, cryptic and phantasmal world ?

Is it possible to reinstall Linux (or distro hop) without losing my Dropbox install? Could I move the Dropbox install to my home folder so it survives the OS install?

Underappreciated `top` (friendo.monster)

Always thought top was one of those programs frozen in time since the 70s, but apparently, it has a feature set comparable to htop and the like. The default configuration just doesn’t show much of it…

This was made for mobian with phosh. Not sure if it will work on other distros. You can always install a dct tool to decompile it and hand copy the opp-tables for the CPU and GPU or something for yours if this doesn’t work.

Currently looking for a good DAW to run on Linux. I used Ableton Live 11 Standard back on Windows, got it running decently on Fedora with Wine, but kind of want to explore some other options.

Linux

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
