As above switched to Linux and i am enjoying it i picked Ubuntu as TBH it was the first I came across. The last two times it has prompted me to update has caused a drama. First would only give me a black screen of text so I did a reinstall.

Hi, all. I’m trying to use the logo creator scripts in GIMP under Debian Trixie. Standard apt install, using Debian sources, including gimp-data-extras, which is the package with the scripts. The packages are all up to date.

I run Debian 13 Stable with KDE Plasma, and have Flathub enabled on KDE’s Discover software store. I have a slight idea of the difference between the two: that Debian packages share system libraries and are therefore lighter in storage but do require password to access those shared libraries and could therefore become a security hazard if installing from an untrusted source, while Flatpaks have all they need and don’t require password to install, being more secure that way, but, as a consequence, consume more storage. Also noticeable is the fact that, for some programmes, the Flatpak version tends to be more recent and it therefore becomes the obvious choice when looking for the latest software.

I am using linux is why i posted this here I have tried every single guide i could find.

I am once again asking for advice on running Linux on tablets. Apparently x86 tablets are just not a thing anymore, even Windows tablets all seem to use the Snapdragon X ARM processors, like the newer Surfaces and the Asus ProArt tablet. Has anyone had experience running Linux on those? If a distro has an arm64 version can I expect to just boot it, or are they more like Android tablets where even if you manage to boot Linux you can expect pretty much nothing to work? Touchscreen support is the biggest thing for me, as I definitely plan on using it primarily as a tablet and not a laptop. Active stylus support with palm rejection would be a bonus but not a priority for me.

Hey all. I’ve recently swapped to Linux and I’ve been really enjoying it so far. I’m still pretty new to basically every aspect of it, though, so I’m not super sure what things I should be wary of with regard to hardware, in particular with Mint.

I’m suddenly unable to get audio for video files, but only for one user and seemingly only with pipewire…. It’s the same in all video players I’ve tried, flatpak and deb.

On Windows it’s quite but on linux it’s wierd. seems like when someone changes volume and you get crackles, hiss, pops.

I just installed Ubuntu 25.10, enabled rdp through the settings menu and ensured firewall port was open. I can connect using rdp with windows just fine. However, when trying to connect using my Ubuntu 24.04 laptop, remmina just immediately closes after connecting. I remember having this issue long ago with Ubuntu 18 or 20? Sucks to suck ubuntu.

I have a collection of ebooks(8 GB atm) that i want to backup to google drive. It usually takes me 2-3 hrs to upload a 2 GB zip file(containing only the most important documents and files).

I’ve been browsing through the throng of generated sites and adware trying to find something that’s simple and easy to track and manipulate. Honestly something as simple as the rimworld schedule would work (I’ve been tempted to boot it up but I can’t add notations or change category fields).

Bom eu tenho usado o void Linux na tentativa de dá uma sobrevida ao meu meu velho notebook com um i3 de 1º geração e 4GB de ram. Estou usando o niri windows manager porém mesmo só com o mínimo de coias instaladas ele fica na casa de 1gb de ram e tem bastante travamento.

I’m not a computer expert or planning to be. I’m just a computer user, a coder, a gamer, and I think I will get the opportunity to afford cheaper PCs if I use the Arch distro from Linux which is very lightweight and fast. I’ve heard Microsoft forces you to bloat your PC with win11.

So I got a VR headset today and while trying to make it work on my pc I did some messing around in the UEFI settings. In my unending wit I accidentally seem to have disabled my GPU because I misread what the setting would do. I am an absolute noob in all matters computer and so am at a loss about what I have to do to make my pc work correctly again. Any help will be welcome.

Hello, I have been trying to get my drivers to play more nice with my hardware. When I originally installed Arch, it automatically installed the nouveau driver which mostly worked. However I was having issues with some windows rendering with big white boxes and a couple random crashes of the OS.

I added a rule to accept connections from 192.168.1.135/24, since my router is configured to hand out /24 addresses. Then, iptables -L -v showed that connections from 192.168.1.0/24 are accepted. When I change the rule to accept connections from .135/32 - or from .135 without specifying the subnet -, it not only works as intended, but it also resolves the hostname correctly.

Change my mind.

Hi guys! I’m considering some tool to edit the texts and images within a PDF. What would be some decent recommendations? So far I think the only with a semblance of working has been Libreoffice Draw, but it messed the formatting quite a lot (the arrangement is very much off in many pages, the text splits incorrectly, some images pop up duplicated and so on). But so far it’s the only one I’ve seen actually allowing me to play with the PDF contents. Are there any other/better options?

My biggest gripe about the default GNOME settings. Are there any sickos that use black text on white?

I have some old HFS formatted burned CDs burning in toast on a classic mac. A friend needs his stuff moved off these backups onto his NAS but his modern mac cannot read these CDs. I can mount them in linux manually but the filenames have illegal characters so I cannot copy them over to anything without losing like half of them.

As someone who downloads or buys their music to listen to via VLC, it’s quite annoying when the volume level between files aren’t consistent. Especially when I’m unable to easily to change the volume like when I’m doing physical labor as an example. So it can go from a perfectly reasonable volume, to damaging my ears, and then to where I can barely hear. I was thinking of going in and manually editing them myself to be consistent amongst each other at some point, but then it got me thinking. Is there an application that will equalize the volume on your audio files for you? If not, would anyone else have a use for one besides me? I’d love to know either way.

I used to distro hop frequently before Linux was almost supported by many things. I preferred Fedora derivatives but Ubuntu pushed those out in the dev space. I switched to Arch because it was funny then a few years ago switched to EndeavorOS because it was easy. I currently can’t get things like OBS to work smoothly (when my display sleeps, screen captures have to be deleted and rebuilt), sharing my screen with basically any tool is a nightmare, and I’m just kinda tired of compiling fixes and deeply configuring. I’m spoiled by the work experience on a Mac where all of this stuff works and it’s POSIX compliant.

If you’re not aware of what preload is, it’s a command line application that allows you to add files to ram, so they can be accessed faster by the applications that need them.

Hello, anyone here has coreboot or any distribution like libreboot? I think of buying something compatible. I mainly make music in reaper with few plugins, browse internet, sometimes do graphic design and sometimes play left 4 dead 2 and games like that. I use artix linux. If you have done this could you share your experience? What to look for?

hehe, so … if you ever change the hostname of a Linux machine, you really really ought to double-check /etc/hosts to make the same hostname change there

My current rig is featuring an I7 10th gen and a nvidia 4070ti. Is there a distro that you recommend me to use as a linux beginner that is also good for gaming and streaming, that will work with my pc parts? Because I heard that intel and nvidia are famous for causing issues on Linux.

I tried it recently and had so many issues with it like apps not indexing in the “open with” file menu, and flatpak apps not interfacing with any system functionality.

I absolutely loathe win11, so I turned to linux and have been trying to find a distro that would allow my surface pro 7 to work properly. I use this thing as a portable art station, so getting the pen and touch screen work perfectly is my first priority, and getting paint tool SAI 2 run properly the second (Krita works I know, but it’s like telling water colorist to switch to oil paints).

What’s the correct process to install and run a .py application and its dependencies? Where should I save the .py file, where should I run it from, and can it interfere with the rest of my system?

Also, what would i need to learn before getting into that?

I suddenly need a wired connection for a job starting very soon but it won’t be hooked up for quite some time. I have my neighborswifi password though. Iknow this is a longshot, but would I be able to use my laptop to change a wireless connection into a wired connection?
