At least when Archer did this for several seasons it was obvious to the audience.
Pretty sure they advertised the first season of that arc directly stating that it was a coma arc.
They did yeah. I don't think it was "now for the coma dream" part, but it was really obvious that things were not going how they were "supposed to" and regularly referenced that he was in the hospital

There’s a few media that I felt much less invested in when this happened in. In my case, it’s all “VR simulations” with super hazy justification.
