Yet they are extremely expensive, costing on average $10,000-$30,000 per year and exceed $500,000 for the most expensive biologics.
Millions of dollars don't matter when you have to buy medication or constantly go to the doctor. These costs can add up fast.

Isn't she really wealthy by now? If she isn't, after all she's done and all her victories, then thats just an additional amount of frustration on top of our shared healthcare bullshit... She deserves to not have to worry about that, I'd have thought she could afford good health insurance.

It would cost less in tax dollars than the majority people pay for it now to collectively bargain for lower drug prices. Significantly fewer intermediaries taking a cut and driving up the price of everything.

No disagreement regarding the private insurance remark, just pointing out how fucked our priorities are.
Well, not for all those intermediaries... and the people who get a cut from thier "productivity". That's the real barrier, rich people siphoning money off of a process they don't meaningfully contribute to.
No disagreement there for sure, I was just surprised to see she's also affected as we all are. I figured she was wealthy enough for it to not be an issue.

I'm sorry but Williams has made over US$40 million in just career winnings, not counting anything she might have gained from endorsements, sponsorships, and investments. That's not upper middle class at best.
Nomenclature of upper middle class aside, the wild thing here is that $40m means she’s closer to being homeless than she is to the billionaire wealthy.
She’s clearly wealthy compared to the average, but her financial concerns actually vaguely resemble that of normal people. She may not care about how much dinner costs, but she is probably acutely aware of her major expenses like housing and medical. $40m is not even close to “fuck you money”.
To stress, US$40 million is the floor of what we know she's earned from career winnings. She has absolutely earned more money than that when considering sponsorship deals, paid appearances, yadda yadda.
She absolutely at least had "fuck you" money. If she doesn't anymore, that's just plain irresponsibility.

COBRA is a fucking joke so that they can claim that you have the "option" to get health insurance while being completely unaffordable.
COBRA is just you paying the rate your employer negotiated with their benefits broker without them covering a portion of it.
Health insurance shouldn't be tied to employment but the bigger issue is that private health insurance is just a parasitic middle man that restricts where you can get care all while exploiting you, your employer and the care providers.
My COBRA cost $100/month less than ACA, so I guess I'm grateful?
Anyway, you can negotiate COBRA reimbursement when changing jobs. I've done it twice. Just throwing it out there. Can't help you if your next job is retirement or something

COBRA means you are paying full price. Here our cheapest family COBRA plan is nearly 3K a month. Individual is $1100 a month. No idea what her cost would be just to keep what she has through COBRA. Her net worth doesn't tell you anything about how much she has in liquid funds. It could all be tied up in property, the market, or a trust that only gives her an allowance to live on. She also has an autoimmune disease and fibroids, which can require surgical removal. Yeah, she's in a way better financial position than the average person, but she needs the insurance too. If she can get it cheaper by being employed, why shouldn't she do that? Should she be forced to blow through her earnings to the point of being destitute just to get health care? No, and none of us should. Should being tied to a job be required to have health insurance, No, none of us should have to go through that. It's indentured servitude with extra steps.
Let me rephrase: insurance and the healthcare industry are fucked, and people who should be set are screwed just like most people in America. The people who should and could have fixed this are beholden and corrupt. The Obamacare debacle showed what side the people in charge are on.
